Antarctic cruises.
Anyone been on one. Quite like the look of them and seem reasonable value at £3k

Avoid the Belgrano special - it'll be going the wrong way, in any case.

Just spend a couple of Foggy Island days on the Woolwich Ferry in mid-Winter and have random mates throw buckets of iced water & fish heads at you whilst going "Grrrrrr!".

Just do the Arctic one, no Penguins but you might catch a Polar Bear, NordKapp (North Cape) all the spectacular fjords like Geiranger fjord, Hammerfest, Trondheim and then onto Svalbard (Spitzbergen) were you might spot a bear or two, then after that the ship goes right up to the icepack. It's in the summer so be prepared for the midnight sun, it weirdly goes down to the horizon and then rises again.

Parents went about 10 years ago, seemed to enjoy, stopped at Buenos Aires, Santiago, Port Stanley. Saw the Penguins. They liked Chile, said there is a large Welsh resident population. Said they paid 20k must have been a decent cabin, yours sounds a deal.

Re: Antarctic cruises.

Went for an interview (in London) for an IT job down there about 10-15 years ago. Got told I was 2nd choice and to pack my bags, but the 1st choice took it on. - without hesitation.

It was definitely a tick-box event for me although the real reason was that one of my uncles is buried in Port Stanley and It would have allowed be to go pay my respects on behalf of the family.

This is the one I saw. NCL seem a fair bit cheaper than the other companies.

Re: Antarctic cruises.
Friends went on one but on a small boat, not a 'cruise ship'. Go in our winter / their summer obviously! they said it was amazing

Joe, just get your arse to Hobart Tasmania where I will hook you up with my daughter, grandchildren and her husband, a marine biologist.

Massive icebreakers in the harbour with big orange helicopters onboard and knowing you you could probably catch a ride. Lily's husband is a marine biologist too which would grease the wheels.

Bell me and I'll hook you up.

I'm still going strong, despite my chronological age, and may well contribute to your obituary thread on here.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to appreciate the irony

Don't wait that long gph, I doubt it'd be that much fun in your 90's.

Too soon.

I'll wait until there's vineyards on Queen Maud Land.

20 years should do it.

Would love to visit Antarctica. That and North Korea. Doubt I’ll ever get to either, but that does sound cheap. Is that flights from here to South America too?

I think opinions these cruises are polarised.

BTW what do you call an ursus maritimus with violent mood swings?

A bipolar bear
